Ways to Get Around Censorship

Posted by admin on Tuesday, October 6, 2009

This is a list of ways to get around censorship in schools, work places, or other place with a "nanny program"
Many of these are common knowledge, so if you have an administrator who is smart then it is possible some of these will not work,
However, more than likely at least one of these methods will be unblocked.

1) Use a proxy--
This is one of the most basic ways to do it. A proxy is a server that you connect to which
is NOT protected, and it receives the information for you and then sends it to you so that
you may read/look at it. There are two kind of proxies (well, there are many, but only
two kinds that we will be dealing with) a proxy server, and a coded proxy. A proxy server
is just that, a server. You configure your browser to connect to that server from the options
menu (for information on that, check a related article on this site) and then just browse like
normal. Most admins, however, would have disabled the options. So you have two
choices: 1)install a different browser -or- 2) use a coded proxy.
A coded proxy works exactly the same way as a proxy server, the only difference is that
you use it like a regular website. The actual use of it is pretty self explanatory. The one
thing that is a downside to them however, is that, since it is on a website, it can be blocked
just like a website that you want to get to. So the trouble isn't using them, the trouble is
finding ones that aren't blocked. You can do this by using google. Search Google for
"PHP Proxy" and "CGI Proxy." You can then write down the URL (or click on it if
you are searching on the censored network.) Then check to see if it is blocked or not
on the censored network. If it is, then keep going and find more, eventually you WILL
find some, there are hundreds out there, they can't block them all, they can't even know
about them all { :] )
If you can't find one (and I can't believe that you haven't by now ; ) ) then you can always
code your own.

2) Use a translator--
This is probably your best bet. If this doesn't work -and- the above method didn't, then
most likely your not going to get through. But I have never seen this one stopped (though
it is possible.) Go to a free translation service like babblefish or the Google translator
(recommended) and there is an option to translate a website. Type in the URL you want
to go to and tell it to translate it from some language to English, the site will stay in English
as long as it is translating it into English. This works on the same principle as a proxy.

3) Use a Circumventor--
Again, this works on the same principle as a proxy, but this one is slightly different
and it takes more work because it is something you have to set up on your own.
I am not going to sit here and put in a long drawn out explanation right here, because
it would be pretty redundant. Instead, here is a link to a site that not only has a list
of all the circumventors you'll ever need, but also all the information you need to set this
thing up, all explained a billion-thousand-sixty-four-trillion times better than I could.

4) URL Malformation--
This method is almost always stopped, if all the other methods didn't work, then chances
are that this won't. But hey, it's worth a shot right? There are a few ways to do this.
The first way is to find the IP address of a website. You can do this multiple ways,
through the command prompt, and through your normal browser. The easiest is to use
a simple online service like the one found at
http://www.selfseo.com/find_ip_address_of_a_website.php
from there then just put the IP address into the address bar where you normally put
the usual URL.
-- Another way is to convert the URL into hex code. You can
Google "Ascii to Hex converter" to find one. And then do the same thing with the
Hex code as with the IP address
This works because some nanny programs/censorship programs only block the URL,
not the actual site. So by using an alternate URL that is essentially the same thing,
you can get to your site easily.

5) Cache --
Another way, that I actually knew about, but forgot to put into this article until jcapra reminded me of it in the comments on the article below, is to use the Cache used in search engines. Most search engines, including Google, Yahoo, and most others, have something called a cache, which is sort of like a copy of the website that is updated every once in a while and is stored on their servers. In these search engines you can actually view the cache by clicking the small link saying "Cached" below a link in the Google search. Sometimes all scripts will not work 100% correctly, but it is a good alternative if the others don't work.

DO NOT think that these are the only ways around these programs. These are only the ones
that I know of and that I think are simple enough for those who would need to read an article
about it to do. Please, feel free to find other ways around it...because that is the way of a true
hacker. Not reading an article about it, but finding the way it works...and then finding the way
it doesn't ;)
